Archery coaching day 1

Just started to shoot on the weekends, and loving it, which led me to lookout for archery lessons. I am have been seeking to improve and learn proper recurve bow archery through online search and youtube, and was finding it was not enough. I stumbled upon coach Harvey via localgymsandfitness.com and decided to give it a try. Its good that I am familiar with most of the terms during the sessions, and was able to visualise his explainations.

The place is an indoor 3 lane place for coaching. My concern was the targets that had glass windows behind it. The targets were large, but if I missed, the windows will surely be damaged. Brought along my 30lb bow and arrows. Following are what I picked up today, besides having a chance to do a few shots.

Lessons

  1. Stance. The way of my feet placement to be at right angle to the shooting target is known as the Square stance.
  2. Posture.  Body should be straight up, and torso rotation when moving towards anchor position.
  3. Bow arm. This is the arm that grip the bow handle. Strength is achieved when doing rotation  of elbow. Simple exercise is to rest hands on the wall and rotate the elbow.
  4. Draw arm. The arm that pulls the bow string. The hands need to be in an outwards C curve.
  5. Proper setup. Can't recall details on this part. Holding the bow string, the arrow should be between pointer and middle finger. Keep pinky and thumb tucked away.
  6. Anchor 3 key components. Nose, lips touch string. Chin, touch index finger.
  7. Release. The bow string moves faster than finger can release. Adjustment of how the release is done will reduce the  amount of pivoting.

Things I also found out

  1. Did a simple exercise and found that I am Right eye dominant. Looks like current situation thate I am doing a right hand draw, and using my right eye to find the target is suited for this dominant.
  2. Plunger helps to reduce the bow clearance. Which will also help prolong lifespan of the arrow feathers/vanes.
  3. When using the eye sight, start pin hole at the blue ring, above the yellow. Its natural for the draw to move the pin hole to bottom of the target, and as it anchors, the pin hole will move back up. During this time, take a peek to reference the bow string is at middle of riser.
  4. My arrows have knocks that are size 'L', which is why it keeps slipping from the string. Coach Harvey offered to do something to my bow string so that the arrows don't keep falling off.

The equipment list

Here are the list of equipment in hand. Have a sight, but style adopted seems more inclined towards barebow style.

Choosing a bow: Length of the bow

Lesson learnt when selecting a recurve bow. Among considerations are a bow length and a person's draw weight that can give the optimum shooting. Here, the notes are for take down recurve bows where there is the riser, string, upper limbs and lower limbs. Wasn't it obvious you needed these basic components? Here is a recurve bow where the arrow is being release. Lets start by determining the draw length. DRAW LENGTH Here is a simplified table based on your draw length to determine the bow length; Draw length ... Bow length 14-16 inches..................48 inches 17-20 inches..................54 inches 20-22 inches..................58 inches 22-24 inches..................62 inches 24-26 inches..................64-66 inches 26-28 inches..................66-68 inches 28-30 inches..................68-70 inches 31 inches and longer...........70-72 inches Bow length is the measure from tip to tip of a bow without string. To find your draw length do the following; Me...

Barebow bow weight

Barebow weight helps balance the bow for aiming. It serves to stabilise the bow after the release, thus helping to maintain the follow thru. Just received my aluminium weight which is made in Malaysia. Weighs at 466gm or 16.4oz (online mentioned 450gm) and cost RM85.00 not including delivery. Found a nice spot for it in my bow case. It is really good to shoot with the weight installed.
